On April 30th DC AAP hosted our Annual Spring Meeting and Dinner which featured a symposium on “Human Trafficking and Health Care.”  The event was held at the Advisory Board Company, and was sponsored by Health Services for Children with Special Needs (HSCSN) and The District Church. 


Immigrant Health Committee Awarded Healthy People 2020 Grant – You Can Help by Sharing Your Experience Caring for Immigrant Children

The DC AAP’s Immigrant Health Committee has recently been awarded the Friends of Children Healthy People 2020 Grant.  As one of five AAP chapters in the nation to win the grant, they will be working to create a “toolkit” for primary care providers to care for recently arrived immigrant children called “Esperanza:  Coordinated Care and Excellence for Immigrant Children.”

In design of the toolkit, they will be collaborating with the group Design for America (DFA). 


Participate in AAP Outpatient Pediatric Diagnostic Error QI Project

Thousands of children are harmed each year by diagnostic errors. Pediatric clinics nationwide are invited to submit a recruitment application to participate in a first of its kind quality improvement project aimed at reducing pediatric diagnostic errors related to (1) missed elevated blood pressure, (2) missed (select) actionable labs and (3) missed opportunity to diagnose adolescent depression.

The Board of Directors of the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is holding elections!  Please look out for the ballot in early June. We count on your vote!

This year you will be voting on the following open positions:

  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Three (3) At-Large Board Member positions
  • One (1) Nominating Committee position

The Board of Directors consists of eleven members:  President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, five At-Large members and two appointed Resident members. 


DC Day of Action: April 30, 2015 – Renew Teen Pregnancy Prevention Funding


Last year, by working together, you persuaded the City Council to pass the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Fund Establishment Act of 2014 and allocate $2 million to reducing teen pregnancy in Washington, DC. Today, the DC AAP’s Adolescent Health Working Group and DC Campaign are asking for your help to sustain this important initiative.


2015 Annual Leadership Forum Follow-up

Over  550  chapter officers, committee, council and section chairpersons, guests, and staff attended this year’s Forum, March 12-15, 2015, at the Renaissance Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois. The voting members heard 117 resolutions covering a wide range of topics.

The reference committee hearings offered members an opportunity to voice their opinion and/or contribute valuable information.
