Be on the Lookout for Your DC AAP Election Ballot and Make Sure to Vote by June 15th!

The DC AAP Board Member election (for Fiscal Year 2016-2017) began on June 1st and runs through June 15th. Members who are AAP Fellows should have received ballots on June 1st. Fellows are asked to vote for Vice-President/President-Elect and two Member-At-Large positions.

If you are an AAP Fellow and did not receive your ballot, please contact Emily Berg at emily.berg@aapdc.org.

Vaccinating Pregnant Women Against the Flu Protects their Infants

The study, “Influenza in Infants Born to Women Vaccinated During Pregnancy,” appearing in the June 2016 issue of Pediatrics (published online May 3) examined the vaccination status of 245,386 women and rates of flu-like illnesses in their 249,387 infants.

State Board Unanimously Approves New Health Education Standards

Washington, DC – The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) approved new innovative health education standards at its public meeting on April 20th. These standards cover grades K-12 and will go into effect for the 2016-17 school year.

The newly revised standards provide a more skills-based model for student learning. Students will develop tools to make healthy choices, and to advocate for themselves and their communities.

Spring Symposium on Toxic Stress Draws Over 100 Attendees

DC AAP welcomed over 100 attendees at the DC AAP Annual Spring Dinner and CME Symposium at Maggiano’s on April 14th. The evening was generously sponsored by The Bainum Family Foundation and The Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation. The topic of the night was Understanding and Addressing Toxic Stress and Adverse Childhood Experiences.
