Chapter Member Named New DCPS Deputy Chief of Student Wellness

heidi-schumacherDC AAP Member, Heidi Schumacher, MD FAAP has joined DC Public Schools as the new Deputy Chief of Student Wellness. In her new position, Dr. Schumacher will work with her teams to: (1) Improve health outcomes for students; (2) Provide high-quality mental health supports to students; (3) Create and implement appropriate 504 supports and services for students; (4) Ensure overall student health and wellness; and (5) Maximize Medicaid revenue to support these services to students.

The National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) recently announced the establishment of the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health Awards, honoring influential young minority leaders making a difference in health care.  Congratulations to our very own DC Chapter President, Lanre Falusi, MD, FAAP who received an award.  The winners will be honored at the 2016 NMQF Leadership Summit on Health Disparities and CBC Spring Health Braintrust

Pediatricians are the First Line of Defense for Children’s Oral Health

Sitting in the clinic room at a 9-month well-child visit, a parent shoots me a fleeting quizzical expression after I recommend finding her baby a dentist by his first birthday. I can hear her thinking, “A dentist already? But he barely has teeth!”

It’s one of the many teachable moments I use to talk about establishing good oral health habits early.
