On April 30th DC AAP hosted our Annual Spring Meeting and Dinner which featured a symposium on “Human Trafficking and Health Care.” The event was held at the Advisory Board Company, and was sponsored by Health Services for Children with Special Needs (HSCSN) and The District Church. The symposium aimed to educate pediatricians about why health care is integrally connected to human trafficking, and what health providers can do about it.
Featured speakers included Katherine Chon, Sc.B., MPA, Senior Advisor on Trafficking in Persons, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; DC AAP member, Aimee M. Grace, MD, MPH, Health Legislative Assistant, Office of U.S. Senator Brian Schatz; Evelyn Chumbow, Survivor of child labor trafficking and student at University of Maryland; Dafina Good, MD, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician, Children’s National Health System; and Kimberly Ball, Esq., Attorney, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. The event was very well received by over 50 chapter members in attendance. Many thanks to DC AAP member, Aimee M.Grace, MD, MPH for all her work in planning the symposium.
