Joyful Markets

marthas-tablecapitol-area-food-bankJoyful Markets are monthly pop-up fresh food markets at elementary schools in the city, co-sponsored by Martha’s Table, Capital Area Food Bank, and DC Public Schools. DC AAP’s youngest members, pediatric residents from both Children’s National Medical Center and MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center partnered to create an “Ask the Doc” pilot project. The residents staff a booth at the monthly Joyful Market at the Anne Beers Elementary School. Each month, there is a health-related theme, complete with a fun activity or game for the kids and informational handouts for the parents who stop by to enable the markets to promote health and wellness.

Martha’s Table is a DC community organization that addresses emergency needs with food and clothing programs and works to assist children and families as they break the cycle of poverty through education and family support. They have a strong focus on fresh and healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) rather than the usual non-perishable canned goods often seen in food pantries. Each child that attends the Joyful Market receives 23lbs of free fresh produce. The Joyful Market includes the whole family — with cooking demonstrations for both adults and kids, and music!

All members of DC AAP are welcome to volunteer! Contact Yael Smiley (ytsmiley@cnmc.org) or Kirsten Orloff (keorloff@cnmc.org) with questions or to sign up!
