On April 24th, a beautiful spring Sunday, the DC AAP participated in an event called Park Rx at Meridian Hill Park in DC. Part of National Park Week, the free event was held by the National Park Service to increase visibility of parks in our communities, and to prescribe nature to children and families, encouraging outside time in one of the 350 green spaces/parks in DC. For the DC AAP, the aim was to meet our patients and families out in the park, and by promoting time in parks, to decrease the impact of chronic diseases like obesity, asthma, and mental health disorders.
Many families attended the event and stopped by our “Ask the Doc” booth to say hi to the friendly physicians staffing it. Families were treated to fun activities and games centered around healthy eating and the importance of exercise. The event also featured an appearance by the Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, and our own local pediatrician and past DC AAP President who spearheaded this effort, Dr. Robert Zarr, both of whom led a brisk walk around the beautiful park. The DC AAP members were even lucky enough to meet Dr. Murthy and take a picture with him and Dr. Zarr!
This fun event helped us connect with our patients and families and show them that their providers care about them. We hope this event helped instill a love of nature and exercise for our little patients!
