The DC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics had a very successful 2015 — advocating for the health and well-being of children, collaborating with partner organizations, agencies and institutions on child health issues, and providing quality educational seminars for child health providers in the nation’s capital.
We held educational symposia, convened working groups, and created partnerships with academic centers, community organizations, DC government, local practitioners and families to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents on issues including human trafficking, marijuana use in adolescents, improving breastfeeding rates, Perinatal HIV and Hepatitis B, family education on nutrition and preventive health and ongoing work on teen pregnancy prevention, early childhood mental health, and immigrant child health.
Advocacy for children is at the heart of DC AAP. Our members have provided testimony to local government officials on issues including establishing a Books from Birth program to provide one book every month from birth through age 5 for every child in DC; safer Conceal and Carry gun laws to prevent accidental shootings; educating new mothers on safe sleep and SIDS risk reduction; promoting parental paid leave; AED availability and CPR training in high schools; promoting screening for critical congenital heart disease in newborns; and reimbursement for donor human milk for NICU babies.
At the recent DC AAP Strategic Planning retreat, Board members and Committee Chairs identified Poverty and Toxic Stress as a child health priority, along with our ongoing work in adolescent health, immigrant health, and so much more. We can accomplish even more with your support. State chapters of AAP do not receive funding support from the National AAP and member dues do not cover the staff, administrative and programming expenses that enable us to do the important work we do for kids in DC. The chapter relies upon donations, sponsorships and grants to accomplish our mission. Your financial support goes directly to the many projects and behind-the-scenes work needed to keep us effective. Any donation amount will help! Please make a fully tax-deductible donation today directly on our website here.
Thank you for helping us move toward our vision that all children and adolescents in DC are healthy, both physically and mentally; have access to quality pediatric health services; and have strong advocates in their families, communities and government. With your support and participation, we look forward to another fruitful year of advocating for the health and well-being of children in DC, and connecting, educating and strengthening child health providers.
